Final Project- Carlos

Final Project!

My intention for my project was to create an ad for the Portland Trail Blazers. I am happy with my project because I think that I was able to meet my goals. I wanted something simple and easy to follow and I think my project does exactly that.

My intention for my animation was to have all of my images, title, and logos come out at the same time. I wanted everything to come together and create a nice set up pictures that had to do with my project. My mask was to show the Rose Garden Arena in the inside so everyone could see what it looked like. The rest of the animation was basically just trying to tell everyone what goes on in the arena. As for drawing, I tried drawing my own basketball player but I just couldn't make it fit with my animation so I decided to leave it out because it just made everything look awkward.

I managed my library by putting everything into folders. Since I had lots of pictures it got a bit confusing when everything was all scattered all over the library. Making folders really helped me have everything nice and organized.

I had trouble with my Action script because I didn't know how to play the second part of my animation. I think that was the most frustrating thing about this project. But once I was able to figure that out, I enjoyed doing the rest. Overall I am pleased with the outcome of my final project, especially since I have never had any type of experience with computers and looking back at the progress that I have made this term.

Dakota Young ~ Project 8

Project 8

1. Sound helped my movie by adding some sound tomy action of my alien shuttle taking off. Makes it more fun and enjoyable to watch.

2. Some things I tried to keep in mind is the size of file, how long was the file, what type the file was (MP3,Wav,etc), but the only thing i really played around is quallity of sound . I changed it to 64b.

3.I struggled with the mask , but I mainly just made a simple motion tween for my text and shuttle taking off.

4.I think a stop would be great , I was trying to get mine to stop but I only could get it to reapeat or loop a certain number of times but not once.

5. I had trouble with the mask i couldnt figure how top layer them, but the audio was fairly simple i had to shorten the length of the audio thats all.

How did Sound improve your movie result? If sound did not improve the movie, why not?

I don't think it really improved the movie for two reasons. One, the movie was only two seconds long and thus there wasn't much time for sound to make much of an impact. Two, I couldn't find any sound that was really suitable.

When including sound, what do you need to be aware of to optimize your movie? What program did you use to modify your audio file?

You need to be aware of the sound file length in comparison to your movie length. If it's a lot longer than the movie then it will take up more bandwidth regardless of how long the movie plays. Using Audacity can help shorten sound files.

What were your intentions in creating your masks? Did you achieve these goals?

I just wanted to create simple motion tweens with the objects. Yes, I achieved that goal.

Did you think the stop at the end of the movie will improve the users experience?

Yes, because repeating movies can get really irritating after a while. (:

What challenges and benefits did you experience using sound and masks to your movie?

I didn't encounter many challenges with either, but I can see where masks and sound can be used to really enhance aspects of movies/animations.

Please note your SWF history as your add your masks and sound. Please note the size of your swf file each time you add each element: the sound, and each mask. We will discuss this in class.

Now that i see it on the big screen (in browser), this thing looks even worse :(

  • How did Sound improve your movie result? If sound did not improve the movie, why not?
The sound adds depth to the MC, without it i would have a bland animation with a flying jet and a charming, cartoonish explosion. The sounds immerse the viewer in a world of special effects and beauty that they would have missed other wise.
  • When including sound, what do you need to be aware of to optimize your movie? What program did you use to modify your audio file?
Audacity. It's a great, light program, that i am familiar with. So, why not use it?
  • What were your intentions in creating your masks? Did you achieve these goals?
My intentions were to add a 3rd dimension to this animation by masking the backdrop of a bitmap. The mountains/sign serve as focal points that help the viewer gauge their location on the spatial plane. Thus, adding dimension.
  • Did you think the stop at the end of the movie will improve the users experience?
I wouldn't want that thing to loop. The noises are of a low quality, because i had to record them from a website with my mic. The animations are shoddy as well, but i wasn't going for quality, rather i was trying to show my aptitude with masks.
  • What challenges and benefits did you experience using sound and masks to your movie?
My main challenge was getting the idea stuck in my head that the area you draw over is what is shown. I just feel like the colored area, or covered area, should be what is omitted. Like you are putting a mask over a certain spot... but i guess that's just me.

How did sound improve my movie?

I was looking through my photo albums for an image that I wanted to make a trace bitmap of for the background. I decided on a picture that I took of the Golden Gate Bridge. The bay made me think of sharks, the sharks made me think of jaws. So without the sound it would have just been a poorly drawn shark fin movie around the bay. With the sound its scaarrrrrry.

What are things to be aware of when using sound files in flash? What program did I use to modify it?

Sound files can easily be thousands of kb and would take a long time to load, which we have to be conscious of as flash designers. I used sound flower to cut the part of the mp3 that I wanted for my movie. I didn't need to, but I used the settings in flash to slightly lower the quality.

What were my intentions when using masks?

My intention was to make the shark fine appear as if it was dissapearing under the water instead of just going off stage at the end of the movie. My intention for the text masks was to meet the requirements of the project and show you that I can make text that is masked.

Do you think that adding stop to the end of the movie will improve the users experience?

Yes because most flash movies look instantly cheap if it just keeps repeating. Movies with sounds get very annoying if the same sound plays over and over and over.

What challenges and benefits did you experience when using sounds and masks?

I experiences no challenges at all when using sounds and masks. Both are fairly simply and straightforward. The benefits is that it adds another dimension to movies when including sound. Masks allow you to make images and text disappear in a different way than filters, alpha and moving items off stage allow you to.

How did sound improve your movie?

I feel like the sound completed the entire movie...it brought it all together and helped it make more sense,

When including sound, what do you need to be aware of to optimize your movie? What program did you use to modify your audio file?

The length of the sound clip and the quality of it. I was first editing mp3's in audacity and found myself getting sucked in and spending a lot of time with that...I ultimately ended up using a library sound and then envelope editing it in flash.

What were your intentions in creating your masks? Did you achieve these goals?

My intentions were to have the alien and text appear and disappear when coming into and out of the scenery. Yes, I achieved this goal...but I also want to spend more time with creating different kinds of masks. I also wanted to have my background showing through a messy outline while moving...this was my favorite part.

Did you think the stop at the end of the movie will improve the users experience?

Yes, because I think that if the ladies laugh was to continue any longer...it would be annoying.

What challenges and benefits did you experience using sound and masks to your movie?

This project was a challenge for me throughout most of it. It actually took me seven hours to complete...which I feel was way too much time to spend on it. When I got towards the end of it...I realized that I was making the masking part way harder than it needed to be. The benefit is that i now know how to edit and import sounds.

Please note your SWF history as your add your masks and sound. Please note the size of your swf file each time you add each element: the sound, and each mask. We will discuss this in class.

Each time i added something it showed the time and size of my history...and the size got bigger and bigger. 828.9 ---->838.5
