Final - Dakota Young

My intent for this project was to make a banner ad to showcase the hot tubs I'm selling. I had numerous symbols I had my hot tub and bubbles symbols and each one of my steam pieces are different symbols. I created a animation of my man waving to click on the link and motion tween my text across the top. I used most of the design tools to make my man and used bevel, sketch skew, color, fill, gradient on my hot tub. I organized my folders and library to make it easier to find the objects in my project. I spent a lot of time messing around with mask and buttons.

Final - Samuel Cohoon

Final

The intention for my project was unknown until 11:00AM, today. But, after several scrapped projects over the last week, and several tears shed, i came up with an idea. A faux super hero/super villian advert. I started with the animation, which was then moved to the center of the project. Then i added the text at the beginning, and lastly the information pages about the products I was selling. Some bologna text thrown in there to show I could use TLF and I was done.

I used a symbol from my Mid Term, which turned into a button after heavy manipulation. That button was then duplicated and turned into the Play/Pause/Link buttons in my project.I actually didn't use any complete graphics. I felt that after my last 'complex' project I needed a break. Needless to say this project still took me several hours, as i'm sure everyones' did.

I managed my library by using lots of folder, as usual. I did the same with my timeline organization. It may not seem organized to the teach as she goes over it, but to me it is perfection. I tried to organize in a hierarchical manner, but like an OS's folder tree.

Here is my color scheme in Hex:

I really enjoyed this project. Big thanks to G4's coverage of E3, it helped me stay sane while laboring over this project today.

What was your intention for your project? Did you meet that goal?
-Well. it took me quite a while to even decide on wanted to do. Originally i was going to make a banner for my website but i decided to make a banner for a futon store instead! Anyways. I cant say i really had a goal but i like how it turned out and it was pretty fun to work on so i think thats about as close as im going to get on that one. On a side note tho everyone should watch
Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko. Thats pretty much what my final was based off of, I even added the ending song to my project. If you didn't click the music button do so now!!!!

Discuss general details of your process.

-Well my final used quite a few motion tweens along with frame by frame animation(mainly when my ufo's decided to drop things off and fly away) I also made alot of my images in Photoshop and imported them over/converted to a symbol

Please discuss how you managed your library assets and your timeline.

- Layers. Lots. and lots. and lots. of layers, like with all adobe products... withought layers.... chances are we would all spontaneously combust in about 15-25 depending on the project.
One interesting thing i noticed during this project was that if you click the layer it automatically selects everything in that layer for you saving you a little time moving things around. (as long as their in the same layer that is which for me is pretty rare since i generally try to make a new layer for just about everything.

I did think about using the motion editor at one point but i just couldn't think of a good use for it in this project, same with layer masks even tho i seriously trying to think of somewhere i could use them. I almost made a mask to follow a lazer for the text removal near the end but i ended up going with a fade out instead with my ufo flying in afterwards with the sign/logoish thing.

Anyway that's about it unless i overlooked something.

What was your intention for your project? Did you meet that goal? My intention was to create an animation that caught the viewer's eye with a skateboarder skating off a ramp and "tribe wheels" following him (showing the audience that the wheels had a mind of their own). I feel that i met my goal.

Please identify your symbols from a prior project. The symbol I used from a prior project was my person_one symbol. (this was also the symbol that I modified).

Please discuss how you managed your library assets and your

timeline. I used folders for both...making sure that i put the proper layers in the logical folders on the timeline and also seperated the symbols from the tween and images and so forth into the proper folders in the library.

Respond to all questions listed within the requirements. My Kuler colers : 04401E, 287326, D9D3B8, A65D03, 591303 (HEX). I used the pen tool for the lady in my movie. I created 5 new symbols (clouds, skateboard, skater w/ skateboard, wheels (2 sets), and the shaded skateboarder as well. like i said above i reused the person_one symbol from a past project and modified it.

My tweens were skateboarder 2(classic tween), clouds(classic tween), the skater w/ the skateboard (motion tween), wheels (motion), wheels falling (motion), ramp (shape tween). I used easing on my wheel tween and the wheels dropping tween. My IK and armature was with my lady. My mask is on the left side where skateboarder disappears and the wheels fall from. I have sound on my start button and added audio to my movie clip.

If you used the motion editor, please describe your experience. I did use the motion editor for two tweens...it was really cool to mess around with it and see how just doing a little bit with it can make a big difference. It really helps with making things smoother.

What was your intention for your project? Did you meet that goal?

Well, to be honest, I really had no idea what to do for this project. I guess that with the end of the term, my creativity died. In the end I was reminded of the giraffe/hyena/lion images we used early on in the class and thought I'd make a simple (emphasis on simple) banner ad for a Safari. I did meet the goal, but I do wish I had come up with an idea that I could have made something really cool out of.

Discuss general details of your process.

I didn't use any from a prior project, but I did make new ones and re-edited them into different symbols. I didn't create a next animation this time. I used the pen tool for the silhouettes, but I wouldn't say it was very difficult for that the graphics are very complex. I used the pen tool, brush tool, bucket tool, some shape tools and gradient fills to create the project background. I named all layers and folders accordingly and organized them logically.

Respond to all questions listed within the requirements.

What was your intention for your project? Did you meet that goal?
My intention was to do something, I liked and would not feel like a big final, I tried to have fun and meet the guidelines.

Please provide a detailed description of your process for any complex graphic.
start with brush tool for more curvy lines and pen for straight line and make sure to brake it down if you want to put it into a armature
Please discuss how you managed your library assets and your timeline.
The timeline is no easy task, i had to keep going back to the beginning to make the intro longer and for the library DONT CREATE LOT OF SYMBOLS WITH GENETIC NAMES!
If you used the motion editor, please describe your experience.
I used to motion editor bounce to use on the robot when he enters the city.

All in all, this project was fun. I wish, i had a computer with flash then I could have made more time, but life goes on. I wanted to see robots and monsters fighting when I went into the multimedia side of things, so i did just that. The drawing is easy with both the pen and brush tool (favorite is the brush). For the building I use of course the deco tool, a very awesome tool. The tween were hard to manage in the beginning but it go easier. The buttons were not hard this time, but after day of action scipting questions; it was ok.

Storyboards

What was your intention for your project? Did you meet that goal?
I tried to make people interested in skateboarding or if they already skateboard, then go out and skate (with my fake product). I think I did. Skateboarders like to see sequenced tricks and that was the coolest part of my project probably.

I didn't use any prior objects, unfortunately. I figured I'd take the hit on the five points to avoid having an alien rampaging through the background of my skateboard ad.

I didn't use a nested animation. I used a lot of tweens, but decided there weren't any particular objects that would benefit from nesting.

Please provide a detailed description of your process for any complex
graphic:
My graphics weren't too complex, but the trick sequence was pretty fun to do. I just brought in a frame-by-frame picture of someone doing a 360-flip and traced over each frame with the brush tool. I did this for each captured position of the skater, then used the five or six different symbols with some motion riding up to the next position and fading out (alpha change) quickly to make it smoother or more stylish. Like I said, it's not super-complex, but it was fun to try and mimic the real movement of a 360-flip.

I mostly used the brush tool to create the objects that aren't text. I did a lot of onion-skinning and that sort of thing. Even the mask of the skater with the concrete and stairs in the background was made by brushing over a real picture.

I like to keep my library and timeline management simple. Folders for each different animation or seemingly same object. Of course, keeping armatures and sound in folders is what I did as well. Library is pretty much the same for me.

I ran into a really frustrating problem. For some reason, between adding sound and actionscript, my armatures disappeared. I tried a bunch of different things and for some reason, they don't show up. There are supposed to be some swinging chains in the final info screen, but they don't show. They were a little cheesy anyway, but this was very disappointing.

Final Project- Carlos

Final Project!

My intention for my project was to create an ad for the Portland Trail Blazers. I am happy with my project because I think that I was able to meet my goals. I wanted something simple and easy to follow and I think my project does exactly that.

My intention for my animation was to have all of my images, title, and logos come out at the same time. I wanted everything to come together and create a nice set up pictures that had to do with my project. My mask was to show the Rose Garden Arena in the inside so everyone could see what it looked like. The rest of the animation was basically just trying to tell everyone what goes on in the arena. As for drawing, I tried drawing my own basketball player but I just couldn't make it fit with my animation so I decided to leave it out because it just made everything look awkward.

I managed my library by putting everything into folders. Since I had lots of pictures it got a bit confusing when everything was all scattered all over the library. Making folders really helped me have everything nice and organized.

I had trouble with my Action script because I didn't know how to play the second part of my animation. I think that was the most frustrating thing about this project. But once I was able to figure that out, I enjoyed doing the rest. Overall I am pleased with the outcome of my final project, especially since I have never had any type of experience with computers and looking back at the progress that I have made this term.

Dakota Young ~ Project 8

Project 8

1. Sound helped my movie by adding some sound tomy action of my alien shuttle taking off. Makes it more fun and enjoyable to watch.

2. Some things I tried to keep in mind is the size of file, how long was the file, what type the file was (MP3,Wav,etc), but the only thing i really played around is quallity of sound . I changed it to 64b.

3.I struggled with the mask , but I mainly just made a simple motion tween for my text and shuttle taking off.

4.I think a stop would be great , I was trying to get mine to stop but I only could get it to reapeat or loop a certain number of times but not once.

5. I had trouble with the mask i couldnt figure how top layer them, but the audio was fairly simple i had to shorten the length of the audio thats all.

Project 8 - Kelle

Project 8

How did Sound improve your movie result? If sound did not improve the movie, why not?

I don't think it really improved the movie for two reasons. One, the movie was only two seconds long and thus there wasn't much time for sound to make much of an impact. Two, I couldn't find any sound that was really suitable.

When including sound, what do you need to be aware of to optimize your movie? What program did you use to modify your audio file?

You need to be aware of the sound file length in comparison to your movie length. If it's a lot longer than the movie then it will take up more bandwidth regardless of how long the movie plays. Using Audacity can help shorten sound files.

What were your intentions in creating your masks? Did you achieve these goals?

I just wanted to create simple motion tweens with the objects. Yes, I achieved that goal.

Did you think the stop at the end of the movie will improve the users experience?

Yes, because repeating movies can get really irritating after a while. (:

What challenges and benefits did you experience using sound and masks to your movie?

I didn't encounter many challenges with either, but I can see where masks and sound can be used to really enhance aspects of movies/animations.

Please note your SWF history as your add your masks and sound. Please note the size of your swf file each time you add each element: the sound, and each mask. We will discuss this in class.

Now that i see it on the big screen (in browser), this thing looks even worse :(

  • How did Sound improve your movie result? If sound did not improve the movie, why not?
The sound adds depth to the MC, without it i would have a bland animation with a flying jet and a charming, cartoonish explosion. The sounds immerse the viewer in a world of special effects and beauty that they would have missed other wise.
  • When including sound, what do you need to be aware of to optimize your movie? What program did you use to modify your audio file?
Audacity. It's a great, light program, that i am familiar with. So, why not use it?
  • What were your intentions in creating your masks? Did you achieve these goals?
My intentions were to add a 3rd dimension to this animation by masking the backdrop of a bitmap. The mountains/sign serve as focal points that help the viewer gauge their location on the spatial plane. Thus, adding dimension.
  • Did you think the stop at the end of the movie will improve the users experience?
I wouldn't want that thing to loop. The noises are of a low quality, because i had to record them from a website with my mic. The animations are shoddy as well, but i wasn't going for quality, rather i was trying to show my aptitude with masks.
  • What challenges and benefits did you experience using sound and masks to your movie?
My main challenge was getting the idea stuck in my head that the area you draw over is what is shown. I just feel like the colored area, or covered area, should be what is omitted. Like you are putting a mask over a certain spot... but i guess that's just me.

Project8 - Jeff C.

Project 8

How did sound improve my movie?

I was looking through my photo albums for an image that I wanted to make a trace bitmap of for the background. I decided on a picture that I took of the Golden Gate Bridge. The bay made me think of sharks, the sharks made me think of jaws. So without the sound it would have just been a poorly drawn shark fin movie around the bay. With the sound its scaarrrrrry.

What are things to be aware of when using sound files in flash? What program did I use to modify it?

Sound files can easily be thousands of kb and would take a long time to load, which we have to be conscious of as flash designers. I used sound flower to cut the part of the mp3 that I wanted for my movie. I didn't need to, but I used the settings in flash to slightly lower the quality.

What were my intentions when using masks?

My intention was to make the shark fine appear as if it was dissapearing under the water instead of just going off stage at the end of the movie. My intention for the text masks was to meet the requirements of the project and show you that I can make text that is masked.

Do you think that adding stop to the end of the movie will improve the users experience?

Yes because most flash movies look instantly cheap if it just keeps repeating. Movies with sounds get very annoying if the same sound plays over and over and over.

What challenges and benefits did you experience when using sounds and masks?

I experiences no challenges at all when using sounds and masks. Both are fairly simply and straightforward. The benefits is that it adds another dimension to movies when including sound. Masks allow you to make images and text disappear in a different way than filters, alpha and moving items off stage allow you to.

How did sound improve your movie?

I feel like the sound completed the entire movie...it brought it all together and helped it make more sense,

When including sound, what do you need to be aware of to optimize your movie? What program did you use to modify your audio file?

The length of the sound clip and the quality of it. I was first editing mp3's in audacity and found myself getting sucked in and spending a lot of time with that...I ultimately ended up using a library sound and then envelope editing it in flash.

What were your intentions in creating your masks? Did you achieve these goals?

My intentions were to have the alien and text appear and disappear when coming into and out of the scenery. Yes, I achieved this goal...but I also want to spend more time with creating different kinds of masks. I also wanted to have my background showing through a messy outline while moving...this was my favorite part.

Did you think the stop at the end of the movie will improve the users experience?

Yes, because I think that if the ladies laugh was to continue any longer...it would be annoying.

What challenges and benefits did you experience using sound and masks to your movie?

This project was a challenge for me throughout most of it. It actually took me seven hours to complete...which I feel was way too much time to spend on it. When I got towards the end of it...I realized that I was making the masking part way harder than it needed to be. The benefit is that i now know how to edit and import sounds.

Please note your SWF history as your add your masks and sound. Please note the size of your swf file each time you add each element: the sound, and each mask. We will discuss this in class.

Each time i added something it showed the time and size of my history...and the size got bigger and bigger. 828.9 ---->838.5

How did Sound improve your movie result? If sound did not improve the movie, why not?
My sound didn't necessarily make the movie better, but it did kind of reinforce the "theme" with the spotlight-esque masks that I used.

When including sound, what do you need to be aware of to optimize your movie? What program did you use to modify your audio file?
You definitely need to be aware of the length of the audio track so that you don't have a large sound/song for a short movie. I just used Flash to shorten it and then fade it out sort of quickly near the end.

What were your intentions in creating your masks? Did you achieve these goals?
I wanted them to look like searchlights or light pouring onto the wall. I think I accomplished it, but there might be a way to blur the edges of the mask that would look more realistic.

Did you think the stop at the end of the movie will improve the users experience?
In this case, yes. Nobody wants to hear that siren wail over and over, and after the masks run along the words, the words show in full.

What challenges and benefits did you experience using sound and masks to your movie?
I didn't do anything too amazing with this project, but it's very beneficial to get extra practice in using them. I'm definitely going to use masks and sounds in future projects, especially the final banner project.

Carlos Rodriguez Project

Project 8

Sound improved my movie result because the sound that I picked was a paradise sound of the beach with birds. The project I made was about going to a paradise and the sound reflects it.

You need to make sure that the quality of the sound isn't bad so that when it plays it sounds clear. I just used the editing functions that flash provides to edit my sound.

My intentions were met in my project. I wanted to do a mask with text and a mask with an image. I wanted to have the plane flying over a different image than the background to show a different part of the island. I wanted the text to basically say something that had an impact on the project.

I think the stop at the end does improve the users experience, unfortunately I was not able to make it stop correctly. When I would use the Action script to stop it it stopped my entire movie for some reason. I had all layers locked so I don't know why It did that. Basically my sound would play and stop but my masks would not play. So I decided to just not put the stop in my movie since I could not figure it out. So this was basically the biggest challenge for me. The masks were pretty easy so that's a good thing.

My experience with masks was fun and I enjoyed it. The only thing I did not enjoy was trying to get my sound to stop. Other than that, it was a fun project.

Project 7

What benefits of using TLF text did you learn?

It's easy to format and great for webpage design, etc. It looks nice when columns/word spacing/ linking is used effectively.

In what instances would you use classic text?

Animations.

How does the design of your buttons relate your user's experience?

There weren't any buttons added to this project... Unless the external link counts? Mine was kind of subtle. Just placed in the two-column text box as a link to info on violins.

What challenges and benefits did you experience using TLF text to your movie?

There weren't much challenges I experienced... except for the linked text boxes. For a minute or two the text wrapped strangely and I had to try and fix it.

Project 7 - Sam Cohoon

  • What benefits of using TLF text did you learn?
There are several benefits, but the biggest I see is in linking text boxes together. It will, no doubt, helps loads with webpage formatting. On top of that we have the ability to change the orientation of the text, the spacing in almost every way possible and the color options for the text box/border.
  • In what instances would you use classic text?
If i remember correctly you would want to use classic when creating animations. Motion Tweens, and all that jazz...
  • How does the design of your buttons relate your user's experience?
Well, the only button i have in my project would have to be the hyperlink. Although, if the question is about buttons in general, then i'd have to say that the design and operation of your button can be as important as the general layout of a webpage. It takes a user to the next page of a website, and if moving to the different pages of a website seems tedious (because of bad buttons) then why would they stay on the site. Aside from the content.
  • What challenges and benefits did you experience using TLF text to your movie?
The main challenge was that, at first, all my typed/copied text was stacked on top of the previous line of text. Solved it by copying the text from the end07 book lesson FLA and then using that as my template. Really weird issue.

What challenges and benefits did you experience using TLF text to your movie?
-This time i really didn't experience any real challenges.

What benefits of using TLF text did you learn?

The Benefits are the TLF are amazing simple to use and edit, Except in action script.

In what instances would you use classic text?
Using something in actionscirpt just because it can seem to process it.
How does the design of your buttons relate your user's experience?
The link is bold and easily visible to the user.
What challenges and benefits did you experience using TLF text to your movie?
The challenges were all in actionscript, the benefits to me at least are that in frame by frame they are easy to use and effective.

Carlos Rodriguez Project 7

Project 7

The benefits for using TLF text is that I was able to do so much more. You are able to edit heading, make columns, and threaded text.

I would use classic text when doing projects that don't require any of the things that I said above. Classic text is just for smaller projects like simple titles and small writing. TLF text is used for more complex things.

My button makes it easy for the user to know that by clicking it it will take them to a website because it clearly states what the link does.

At first I had trouble making my 3 column text and it was because the text box I made was not long enough for 3 columns.

I'm excited to use TLF text for upcoming projects and expanding text boxes to make them look nicer.

Project7 - Jeff C.

Project 7

What benefits are there to using TLF text?

TLF text allows you to link text boxes to avoid creating one large text box and instead draw viewers attention toward specific areas of your movie or page by hugging images or movies with text boxes that have continuity. It also allows you create multiple columns within the same text box as well as other features not found in Classic text.

What instances would you use Classic Text?

Classic text is best used if you want to create animation, add filters, or create strong titles for movies. Such as the title that we created for this project.

How does the buttons you've created relate to the users experience?

The only button that was created was a hyperlink. I used Lorem Ipsum as my text generator, which reminds me of latin. So I created a link to a website that has the latin alphabet and current alphabets. The link is clickable, standard blue and outlined.

What challenges and benefits did you experience with TLF text?

I didn't really have any issues with TLF text, with the exception of a strange error I get whenever I use it saying something about how the movie will need to preload unless I change settings. The benefits as I mentioned before allows for threaded text and columns which really helps in a layout design or magazine style movie.

Anything else?

I really liked this project. It was simple and easy, and I learned some important strategies for creating this kind of movie.

-Jeff C.

Project 7 - Casper

Project 7

What benefits of using TLF text did you learn? I could do much more with my text when using TLF, such as columns and or wrap-around text.

In what instances would you use classic text? When I don't need the above mentioned layout control and when i'm targeting an older version of Flash Player.

How does the design of your buttons relate to your user's experience? I made my hyperlink obvious by changing the color of the text.

What challenges? I'm hoping that i uploaded my swz correctly. Had a hard time figuring that out.

What benefits? I'm really excited about learning the linking text boxes. I can see myself incorporating this into my future flash designs.

Project 7 - Craig Phillips

Project 7

What benefits of using TLF text did you learn?
I learned to format the text similar in manner to the way a professional publication would be. It's good to know how to embed the characteristics of the text, too. Especially the stuff that can be edited by users (because you still want to control the style of any inputs).

In what instances would you use classic text?
I would use classic text for animations or for text that doesn't need to be very dynamic (and therefore would take less memory or loading time).

How does the design of your buttons relate your user's experience?
I didn't design a button so much as I just made the link-able words stand out. I tried to make them very obvious (change of color and boldness) without alienating their look from the rest of the text on the page.

What challenges and benefits did you experience using TLF text to your movie?
TLF text made it really easy to maneuver the text around my other objects on the stage (ie: the images). It wasn't too challenging except for the fact that using TLF text usually seems to change the end product (the swf) in some small, often unnoticeable way. I don't know why this happens, besides maybe that there are so many formatting options, that some of them may overlap in code or something. It usually doesn't hurt the movie; it's just sort of confusing.

Finally done, MY Project 6

Project6.1
Project6.2

How does the design of your buttons direct the user to know what button to click?
The buttons, I used have text on the layer above them. I like for my buttons to be simple, in the beginning I wanted to use the common's library arcade buttons. They looked cool and had the keyframes taken care of, nice. I use some simple buttons, I made and didnt go exactly to the backround so it stood out.
What state did you add the animated movie clip? What challenges did you experience?
The challenges were but of course the actionscripting. The "AS" is hard to use for me but i have always had tiny mistakes and here it really showed. The movie never stopped on frame 1 until I fixed it after being helped.
How does the design of your buttons relate your user's experience?
I kept it simple and not too flashy but I should have done more but I wanted to get it actually working first.
What challenges and benefits did you experience when adding actionscript to your movie?
Challenges, a lot. Actionscripting is rather difficult when you done know or when you think you know and find out it does work and then what then. I first went looking to the internet for clues but alas, all are for older models of flash and after you finally found something that looks right and putting it in and it does work. This happened to me alot.
Please share anything else regarding your experience.
It was hard, but feels so rewarding when it works.

The design of my button is pretty obvious for the user because I named them specifically for what each button does. I have a play button, a stop button, and a link button. Each button does exactly what it says.

I faced a challenge with my movie clip because it wasn't playing correctly due to the fact that I was using TLF text. I had TLF text in my buttons and in my title so it prevented my movie clip from playing. After I changed the TLF to classic it worked perfectly fine.

The design of my buttons are actually really simple but I feel that they stand out on my project because of the colors. I feel it makes it quite easy for the user to find the buttons and navigate through my movie clip.

Action script was challenging because any little typo messed everything up! I could not figure out how to play/stop my movie and it was because of dumb typos. Actually the first time I was typing in a totally incorrect code so that's why it wasn't working. After that I just had a few extra spaces and commas in the wrong places which messed it up. Other than that action script is easy as long as you are super careful when typing in the code.

How does the design of your buttons direct the user to know what button to click?
-Well it has the play symbol to start and a X to stop so. I think its pretty easy to figure out.
What state did you add the animated movie clip? What challenges did you experience?
-I just added mine to the top left corner.
How does the design of your buttons relate your user's experience?
-Well it seemed to match the project and took up a pretty low amount of space, i really cant see how the user would have any major complaints about it.
What challenges and benefits did you experience when adding actionscript to your movie?
Please share anything else regarding your experience.
- That was a rather painful experience..... but luckily i finally got it to work! The weird part was the part where i did one thing on the computer in the lab and it didn't work then i try the same exact thing on the classroom computer. and it works perfectly.(honestly i think the school computers are just out to get me......)

Project 6-1

Project 6-2

I should have a disclaimer for my Project 6-2. I procrastinated and right when I should've posted both projects, ran into trouble with the code for my url link. I'll replace the link once I fix this.

How does the design of your buttons direct the user to know what button to click?
I made the buttons painfully obvious. Simple button shapes with a matching color scheme to most of the rest of the movie were what I opted for. I might've made more complex, interesting buttons, but the small stage size for my midterm wouldn't have been appropriate with buttons like that.

What state did you add the animated movie clip? What challenges did you experience?
I haven't added it yet, as my project is already late, but I'd like to use a little alpha fade or maybe even a gradient shimmer across the buttons in the over state.

How does the design of your buttons relate your user's experience?
I just stuck with the same theme, colors, and font as the rest of the movie, to make it blend in and still be really obvious and easy to use.

What challenges and benefits did you experience when adding actionscript to your movie?
The benefits are that the user now as more control over the movie and doesn't have to be annoyed by something looping over and over. It shouldn't have been challenging, but I did have problems with my "stars" link button. If I had managed my time better, I definitely would troubleshoot it.

I think the main lesson I took away from this project was to manage a project better time-wise, since this is something that would be frustrating for small, personal projects, and completely unacceptable if this were a professional setting.

Project 6 - Kellie

Project 6-1

Project 6-2

How does the design of your buttons direct the user to know what button to click?

Well... the text pretty much gives a one-word description of what each button does and/or leads to. The rest of the design is purely aesthetic and doesn't really direct anything.

What state did you add the animated movie clip? What challenges did you experience?

The over state. I didn't really experience any challenges with that portion-- it was pretty easy.

How does the design of your buttons relate your user's experience?

I guess it matches with the rest of the color scheme.

What challenges and benefits did you experience when adding actionscript to your movie?

I had a hard time getting the actionscript to work correctly for my buttons. I got the url link to work but for whatever reason my "play" and "stop" buttons weren't working correctly for a while.

Project 6-1
Project 6-2

How does the design of your buttons direct the user to know what button to click?
This question makes me chuckle a bit. My Star button has a large friendly 'GO' on it and is a green circle. My stop button is in the shape of a stop sign and has 'STOP' written on it. My link button is just a bit more mysterious in that it is simply labeled 'AlpineStars' and takes you to the AlpineStars website.

What state did you add the animated movie clip? What challenges did you experience?
I added animation changes on both the over and down states on all three buttons. This was the easy part of the assignment and I didn't run into any challenges except for that I had to go back and redo some work because I did not separate the skins, text and sound into different layers.

How does the design of your buttons relate your user's experience?
The buttons were designed relative to traffic and motorcycle riding. Also the AlpineStars logo always involves a star.

What challenges and benefits did you experience when adding actionscript to your movie?
I gained no benefits from adding ActionScript to my project, but I think that the reason for that is because I did something wrong that overcomplicated my midterm. But I haven't been able to figure out what. The benefit I did gain was getting acquainted with ActionScript and what the coding looks like and specific command function related to buttons.

Please share anything else regarding your experience.
This was insanely frustrating, and I wasted a lot of time I really could have used for other things. That being said, the in class troubleshooting that you took time for with us was not only the best outcome to the situation possible, but still quite helpful to help me understand from a conceptual point of view, regardless of not being able to figure out my specific issue.

  • How does the design of your buttons direct the user to know what button to click?
The text that accompanies the buttons are the most obvious indicators of the button function in my project. 'play' Plays the animation, 'pause' pauses the animation, and 'link' button is a portal to another website (which happens to be the steam page for portal 2 :P).

  • What state did you add the animated movie clip? What challenges did you experience?
I added the movie clip that i made, which was just an oval with varying states of glow, to the over state. I didn't face any problems getting this to work because i've been playing around with buttons quite a bit since our lecture on them. I think i've got them down pat, at least the basics of buttons.

  • How does the design of your buttons relate your user's experience?
I think the size, shape, and orientation of your buttons can have life altering effects on the users that view and use them. So much so that I try my hardest to create the perfect button for the scenery that surrounds it; from hues to transform handles, i make sure that the button is perfect.

  • What challenges and benefits did you experience when adding actionscript to your movie?
Well, let me just start off by saying that i truly enjoy the actionscript side of Flash, but it does have it's flaws... and by that I mean I couldn't figure out how to get my nested animations to stop playing at the beginning of the animation and work with the play button at the same time. I still have no idea. Google provided me with mile long code segments, I guess this is a questions for the class room.

Benefits?:

I prefer the keyboard to the mouse, jelly to peanut butter, and snowflakes over a warm car any-day; so, this project let me tap into my neglected keyboard skittles which have been squandered in favor of that other HID that's heavily used in this course.

Project 6

Project 6-1

My play button is to play my movie. The stop button is to stop the movie. My nature button was intended to link the user to a nature website...but i was having much difficulty doing so.

One of my biggest challenges was getting my link button to work. I copied the code from the class content but couldn't get it to work. I tried and tried and tried...but no luck. I plan on spending more time on trying to figure out what I did wrong.

I kept the design of my buttons really simple and also felt that the colors i used for them went with the movie because of the nature colors and how they complimented one another.

My biggest challenge with this project besides my link not working was duplicating the symbols correctly. It kept jumping to different layers while doing that and then I couldn't edit them. I found myself starting over many times. I've benefited from this project because now I can create buttons, sound in my movies, and understand how play and stop in them work a lot better.

Project 5

What specific use did the shape tween serve?

The shape tween was useful for turning one object into another.

What challenges did you have using the Bone tools?

The bone tools were a bit annoying to work with sometimes. The armature structures would sometimes move unnaturally and occasionally different symbols would not connect together.

After creating the IK with shapes and symbols, which did you prefer? Why?

I preferred the shape IK only because it gave me less trouble, but overall I think the symbol IK has a lot more uses.

What benefit did you find from the nesting an IK within a movie clip?

It allowed the IK animation to repeat over and over, which, if used effectively, can be very useful.

Please share anything else regarding your experience.

Don't have much to say here... I ended up using my alien for the symbol IK for this project since it was already broken up into fragments, but it was still a bit troublesome trying to link the armatures together.

1. What specific use did shape tween serve? Turning a small puddle into a bigger one for the dogs.

2. What challenges did you have using the bone tool? Selecting them properly at first...then i got it.

3. Which did you prefer, The IK w/ shapes or symbols? Why? The shapes because it was a lot easier to deal with and much quicker for me.

4. What benefir did you find from the nesting? I felt that i could do a lot more with it.

5. Share your experience. I really enjoyed working with the bone tool. This has been my favorite thus far. I believe it's a bit intuitive...which i haven't really experienced with flash until now.

Project 5 - Sam Cohoon

  • What specific use did the shape tween serve?
It allowed me change the shape of the 'character' in my animation (kirby) in a fluid, and effective way. Without it the animation that it creates instantaneously would probably take around 30minutes-1hour to create.
  • What challenges did you have using the Bone tools
My only issue was getting a shape tween applied to a boned object. The object that i was working with had a motion tween applied to it. I ended up duplicating my symbol, breaking it apart, and then creating a shape tween. I then cut the motion tween short and placed the shape tween right at the ending point (on the stage) so it could transform at just the right time. If that makes sense.
  • After creating the IK with shapes and symbols, which did you prefer? Why?
Symbols! I prefer symbols for many reasons, and when adding a complex tool, such as the bone tool, to the mix it's always nice to have an easily editable instance at the ready. It does away with fused joints (that have to be fixed with that one secondary bone tool) and makes organization, which is paramount, simple.
  • What benefit did you find from the nesting an IK within a movie clip?
It made animating a lot easier. Nesting a tween inside another can lead to problems when you continue to stack multiple animations deeper and deeper inside the symbol like Russian nesting dolls; IK allows you to manipulate multiple symbols that are connected with the bone tool at the same time, with a smooth and appealing outcome.
  • Please share anything else regarding your experience.
I actually enjoyed this Project. It didn't involve any tools that were hard to grasp or use, and i was able to call upon the knowledge from past lectures to complete some of the more difficult aspects. That's not the only reason i enjoyed this project, though. I needed to get a few reference images for kirby, so i pulled out the old gamecube and played some Super Smash Bros. Melee. Great game, glad I choose the subject for my project. Also, the jiggle-bone leafs are just there so i could get the bone/spring animation in there...

Project 5

Project 5

What specific use did the shape tween serve?
Being able to change the color, size and shape of a shape with out making into a symbol.
What challenges did you have using the Bone tools
When using the symbol IK, I had a hard time trying to add a bone off of a existing bone.
After creating the IK with shapes and symbols, which did you prefer? Why?
Shape, with a shape IK as long as you have the same color and connected it works every time :)
What benefit did you find from the nesting an IK within a movie clip?
I could save it as a symbol in my library, then for the grass that I used that can be just helpful if I come across a project where I need moving grass.
Please share anything else regarding your experience.
I thought; since, the bone tool is most used in a line. I thought why not snakes after reaseaching it is very possbile to use them for a body. I still have troubles and decided on the snakes.

Craig Phillips - Project 5

Project 5

What specific use did the shape tween serve?
I used the shape tween to change the otherwise-empty flower pot into a flower pot with a budding plant in it.

What challenges did you have using the Bone tools?
The biggest challenge is using the bone tool on a shape made with parts all in a close area (ie: my crab shape). It wasn't as bad when I started using the bind tool to get rid of some of the associations, but at first all the legs were pulling on each other and distorting the shape pretty badly.

After creating the IK with shapes and symbols, which did you prefer? Why?
I think I prefer using IK with symbols. It's a much bigger hassle (at least in the sense that it's time-consuming) to have to build all the different parts separate, but a single shape is harder to manipulate without compromising the believability of the shape itself (see the distortion I mentioned in the above question).

What benefit did you find from the nesting an IK within a movie clip?
This is just as beneficial as nesting any other animation. It's good for when you want an object to animate or behave a certain way while moving otherwise on-screen. It's essentially making the object multi-task its movements/behaviors (ie: my puppet flailing its limbs while moving across the screen).

This was a pretty straight-forward project and most of the problems that I encountered were organizational. I also kept blowing the handling of the armature if I wasn't paying enough attention. For example, I would try to select the whole puppet and move it across stage, but would accidentally grab a single bone or symbol and disassemble the parts.

What specific use did the shape tween serve?
-Well i cant really say that it had much of a purpose, it was fun to play with but i cant really say that i would have used it for this project unless it was on the list of requirements.
What challenges did you have using the Bone tools
-It can be a little difficult to control at times and you are also unable to move the entire object unless you copy it into a symbol.
After creating the IK with shapes and symbols, which did you prefer? Why?
-Symbols, Their slightly easier to modify later on and the IK tends to distort your shapes a bit so you really have more control over it if your using symbols.
What benefit did you find from the nesting an IK within a movie clip?
- Well like with the shape tween there was really no benefit and i only used it to fit the project requirement. I can see how it could be useful in other projects especially if you wanted to duplicate or have multiple instances with different sizes but i just didnt have much use for it in this project.

Carlos Rodriguez- Project 5

Project 5

The purpose of ths shape tween in my project was to create a shape and turn it into something completly different. My idea was of a caccoon hatching into a butterfly.

The bone tools are sometimes hard to use because changing the way you want them to move can get a little bit frusterating at times. I wanted to make it seem like the snake and worm were about to attach each other. Well the snake attack the worm.

I prefer using IK shapes rather than symbols. I think it is alot more fun because you can really create new things. You can make a shape be one thing and in the next turn it into something completely different.

The benefit I found was that it helped me create a movie clip of something simple. I was able to make a butterfly hatch from the caccoon and also create a symbol with IK and also a worm using the springs.

In my project I used a total of six symbols; All were new symbols that I created. I created a custom motion for the motion tween to make the path of the cat and dog fight. I had many frustrations with the tweening , I found myself always adding extra frames and keyframes and at times I would get overwhelmed with the motion editor.

The Symbol I dragged over from a previous project was kyubey(alien) I also dragged over a square and edited to spin but in the end i couldn't really find a place to make it fit in the project so its just sitting in my library.
For one of my tweens i used a motion tween to make my dango jump onto the stage before transforming. This is also where i used a custom ease to get the correct timing.

Overall my movie wasnt really that complex. I used embeded animations for the background and my jumping dango(for anyone who still has no idea what im talking about its the cute little blog like creature) I used frame by frame for the transformation and expression changes then i just used motion tweens to make my chibi run off and on the screen before returning to the starting position and transforming back into a dango and flying off with a classic tween/motion guide. And as far as drawing i used the pen tool to make the ground layer as well kyubey(along with the pencil and brush) Kyubey was also my only real complex graphic since i drew my dango and chibi in photoshop and transferred over/converted to a symbol but to make him i just used imported a picture, locked down the layer and drew over it with the pen tool making extra layers and locking them down as i went along to avoid any missclick related errors then made a few extra layers underneath my lines and used those to color it in. Ok... that was long but im pretty sure that covers just about everything.

This was somewhat time consuming, but overall, I like the end product. I based my project around one of my favorite games back in the day- The Ocarina of Time.

The most challenging part, I think, was drawing out the characters and having to decide ahead of time which portions to break up into different layers in order to animate them correctly. Second most challenging part was the motion editor, and getting my classic tween to work correctly. Overall, I mainly used the paint brush tool to block in shapes, but I also used the pen tool for Navi's (the fairy) wings, and various, altered shape tools for Epona's (the horse) and Link's (the person) body parts.

I didn't really find any correct color schemes on Kuler to use in my project, as each of the characters presented don't exactly follow an aesthetic color scheme that would be... well, easily found... at least not together, anyway. So instead, I used Kuler's color wheel to find the individual colors that I needed. They include: #66CCFF, #A93001, #63AD52, #3B007D, and #FFE124.

The symbol that I duplicated into a different symbol was one of Navi's top wings. I shortened it and changed up the width, as well as re-drawing the vein details inside of them.

For my motion-guided tween, I figured Navi would be the perfect subject, since she usually loops around in a random pattern. I also used her as my nested animation, so as she's flying around in circles her wings flap as well, though it's a bit hard to tell since she's moving a bit fast and her wings are slightly transparent.

For my motion tweens, I had Epona's tail and head moving, and a Poe (ghost) floating off to the side. Overall, I tried using the motion editor, but I'm not sure if I even used it right. I don't think I got my eases to work correctly.

>Color Scheme:

I used a custom color scheme for my midterm because I was basing it on a game that had it's own color pallet. I just opened the game and took screenshots of the environments and the characters until I had the colors that I needed. The few colors that I used the most are:
>D9E3E8
>464F55
>E6E7E8
>7D7D7D
>3B3B3B
>A7AAAD
>595959

So, basically just a whole lot of gray variants...

>Describe Process:

Well, first off, I created the robots in my animation and then the stage that they appear on. I used the pen, paint brush, pencil, paint bucket, rectangle, oval, and primitive tools to create the robots (Atlas and P-body(Peabody?)) as well as the camera. After they were completed I designed the stage, which is a basic hallway that the robots/camera were copied too. After I copied the symbols over I started by animating the robots, the camera (to a degree) and the 'crushers' that were supposed to be ever-present in the second Portal game. I left actual portals out of this project, doesn't make sense does it? Well, I guess this was just an ode to a game mechanic that I was really looking forward too after seeing the Portal 2 trailers.

>Questions Asked In Reqs:

The classic tween with the motion guide only fitted one animation in my project, and that is one that I wasn't planning on implementing; I had to add the dangling robot arm/handheld portal device at the end so that I could show my 'knowledge' of the classic tween. My choice to use this type of tween was appropriate primarily because I wanted to set a path for the arm to follow, which is easiest with the classic tween and motion guide.

I used a preset ease when I brought the robots onto the stage. The ease I chose to use was the Simple (slow) ease, just because it was there and I didn't need anything fancy. I also used this ease when adding the transparency to the robots.

After creating two motion tweens that fulfilled the requirements I got to work on the many others that I had to create. Three of them were used on the crushers that rise to the ceiling and then fall back down, while another was used to crush the two hapless robots. Several more were used as nested motion tweens too contort the arms of Atlas (the circular robot on the right) when he was crushed, and to move the arm back up to the ceiling when the crusher rises back up.

>Detailed Description:

I really don't want to get too detailed, but here it goes. Both of my robots contain around 30 symbols and several folders in my library to contain all of them, so the process to create them was long and, oddly, enjoyable. Three things that you will need when you embark on such an endeavor: a television providing you with white noise, patience, and video breaks every hour on the hour.

I began by taking reference shots in game, and then importing them to my library. Either by using the Pen or Line tool (depending on complexity/contours of the shape) start drawing the shape that you wish to recreate. I recommend a .10 stroke for neat lines that you can fill in with your desired color later. If you are creating a humanoid start with the body, then work out to the limbs and head. Typing this i realize that mos of this is common sense... so basically just create symbols from part of your drawing when you need it layered a certain way and in the end (say when you've finished the limb or body) you create a symbol out of that and label it 'body' or 'leftleg'. You'll also want to create a folder in your library for this section of the body; then, once you've made the entire being, create yet another symbol entitled '***Full' or '***Completed'. I just found that my filling your library up with symbols from your project it makes it ten times easier to edit when you really need to.

>Motion Editor:

I used the motion editor very little while creating my midterm project. I only used it when I needed to, for eases and certain color effects. Other than that I strayed away, not because the UI is overwhelming, but because I have to drag it out of it's locked interface to see all of the settings that I want to change... such a pain.

>Imported Symbol:

The symbol that I used from a different project was the star that i created way back in project #2. I copied it in and changed it's color and size so that it would look similar to the Aperture Science logo on the side of the camera.
[/esoteric]

I would have just made the log myself but I needed to use a symbol that I had previously created somewhere in the midterm.

Craig Phillips - Midterm Project

Midterm Project

Building:

I began by creating the starry background. This was accomplished with a black stage with a white spraypaint tool. I turned on the random scaling to give the sky a speckled, semi-realistic look. It was easy but worked really well. I can even see some faux-constellations in the sky I created.
I then started on the astronaut, as he's kind of the main focus of the project. He was really fun to draw. I used the paintbrush and paint bucket for pretty much all of him. I started with his head and torso, since I knew that other than rising into the foreground, he would otherwise be stationary. I drew the two arms separately from the rest of him, because I knew that at the end of the project I would have him raise his hands up in fear of the "approaching" supernova.
I did the spaceships, asteroid and supernova next. They were pretty fun, since I could take some creative liberties with their designs. I used the shapes tool and line tool for most of "spaceship1" and the pen tool and some shapes for "spaceship2". I used the paintbrush and paint bucket for the asteroid and supernova.
I imported the alien and scaled him down so that it would be (at least mildly) feasible that he could stand on the asteroid as it flew by the astronaut's view.
For the text, I just picked the cleanest font I could find.

I only used one symbol from a prior project, which was the alien creature. I pretty much only modified his scale and placed him on a layer underneath the asteroid to give the appearance that he's peeking over the side of it to glance at the astronaut. All of the other symbols are new, created specifically for this project.

Animations:

I used a simple motion tween to raise the astronaut (and his arms) from the bottom of the stage into the foreground, between where the text would appear.

I tweened the alpha on the text, so that it would fade in and eventually fade out (after a rise into the foreground), so that it wouldn't take up too much of the screen, while the more important visual actions occurred. I also changed the brightness very rapidly toward the end with the astronaut (and his arms) and the supernova to give the appearance of its blast radius hitting him (kind of in old-school video game form). I did this frame-by-frame because it was just easiest to insert the keyframes and use the color transformations to affect it frame-by-frame.

I used custom easing on the text fade-out (very subtly, because it wasn't super-necessary but a nice addition) by tweaking the Bezier Curve in the motion editor to get the text to fade slowly at first and then much quicker before disappearing completely. The motion editor is pretty easy to use, but as mentioned during class, if you're working on anything but a large monitor, it is very frustrating to have to either scroll around a lot or adjust your windows. It's pretty handy, though, and if my project was longer and more detailed I probably would've used it more.

I used the classic tween on "spaceship2" (the paper-airplane-esque one). It was appropriate because it was a simple animation that looked better with a little curve (to give a silly nod to a real paper airplane's loopy motion), so I used a motion guide layer to create the curve that the spaceship traveled on and oriented it to the curve so that the nose of the craft faced the direction that it was traveling.

My nested tween was the animation of the alien waving from behind the asteroid as they hurdled across the screen.

Comments/review:

I still have trouble with the pen tool, but since I only used it on "spaceship2", it was useful to create the odd shape without having to try and draw it and "straighten" it out, which sometimes doesn't work as intuitively as I thought.
I love messing with the paintbrush. It's so simple and with the right mouse (or if I had some expendable income, a tablet), I can create a lot of cool stuff that it kind of smooths out and stylizes for me.
The motion editor, as mentioned above, was only used with the text and so wasn't a big problem. I'm pretty comfortable with it, though, and would use it more if the project were bigger and more detailed. Maybe for future projects or the final I'll do some in-depth motion editing.

That's pretty much it! All in all, it was the funnest project yet. I love creating all the shapes and symbols from scratch. I'm stoked to mess with IK and shape-tweening now.

Carlos Rodriguez Midterm

The one symbol that I used from a different project was a rock. But instead of using it as a rock I edited the symbol a bit and used it as a cloud.

My Frame by frame animation was the fire that plays when the 2 cars pass the finish line. My classic tween was basically just the cloud covering the sun at the end. I waned to change the background color after the cloud covered the sun but I found it too difficult so I just left it alone. My motion tween was the 2 cars that were racing to the finish line. I made them be head to head at first but then one pulls off and goes faster than the other. As for my text I made it blurry when it was coming down but after the 2 cars finished the race I took the blur effect off so it would be clear.

The drawing tools that I used were the pen tool, shape tool, and the line tool. The most difficult part for me was drawing the cars. I used the pen tool for that and at first they just looked like boxes but after messing with the curves I was able to make it look somewhat like cars. I used the line tool to create the trees and the brush for the tree trunk. I think the most difficult part of this project was just getting ideas as to what to do next. I couldn't think of anymore animation to do because I went blank. Another one of my biggest challenges was the motion editor. There is so much you can do with it that half the time I was messing with it I would just mess up with my idea so I decided to keep it simple, especially since I already struggle a lot doing the basic things with this program.

* The one symbol that I used from a previous project was my ball symbol. This was also the symbol that I modified. I modified it to look more like a football rather than a 3D beach ball.

*My frame by frame animation is my fire. My classic tween is my leaves that fall from the tree (this was appropriate because the classic is really simple and I didn't need to mess with the movement much, I just needed the leaves to fall from the tree to the ground). My motion tweens are My big drum, the football, and my person with the mohawk. I created a custom ease for the drum which allowed me to make the drum seem more faded and appear as if the fire destroyed it when the fire became larger (also a custom ease for my guy who gets hit by the leaves to appear as if he is completely covered by them) and a random ease for my ball which allowed my ball to disappear when the fire exploded (playing with the alpha assisted with this as well). One of my other motion tweens were my three people holding hands...my intentions was to make them appear dancing to the side as the drums were being played. My nested motion tween is my drummer in the right bottom corner.

*I used a lot of drawing tools, some including the pen, pencil, deco (fire and leaves), I was able to manipulate my objects and symbols with practicing my Bezier curves.
My biggest challenges were the motion editor (figuring out exactly what i needed to do to get end intentional results) and my nested animation took me awhile to get down right. My favorite results were my fire slowly growing with my frame by frame animation and my custom ease with the guy getting covered completely with the leaves. General details mainly consist of how it took me quite awhile to first play around with the tools to start creating what I wanted in my project...once I had that down then i started with my tweens (I spent most of my time doing this because it took me awhile to understand the ease's). I wanted to create a scene where people are playing drums around a fire, dancing and chaos happens when drums start to catch on fire. Seemed simple in my head but once I was creating it, it took me a lot more time and focus than i expected. Overall, this was a great growing experience for me understanding the capabilities that flash has.

* I did use the motion editor, and like i said above...this was one of my biggest challenges. There's so much you can do with this that I caught myself getting sucked in and messing with a lot of things that it allows you to do...I played around with it for awhile until i started to learn what I needed to manipulate to get the results I was looking for.
